The Body Shop Celebrates Our Incredible Planet Every Day

Generations from today, we would like to see new trees take root, smell the blooming flowers, and know that the earth is flourishing. As the late Dame Anita Roddick said: “The business of business should not just be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed." Since 1976, The Body Shop has always strived to use the planet’s resources wisely, giving respect to the environment and leading the way in packaging and sourcing responsibly. Everyday, The Body Shop invites customers to walk the green journey with us.

Choosing sustainable materials
1. We use sustainable palm oil in all of our soaps, helping to save rainforests, protect endangered species and defend the rights of indigenous peoples and their land.

2. 65% of our products contain Community Trade ingredients, which are produced using traditional farming methods.

3. We have phased out polycyclic musks and phthalates from all our product formulations.

4. We use energy derived from renewable sources where we can.

5. Most of our wood products such as hair brushes use FSC-certified timber.

6. We are AGAINST animal-testing. We use only synthetic musk in fragrance and synthetic hair in our make-up and hair brushes.

7. We are increasing the use of organic ingredients in our products.

Pushing our limits in product packaging
8. Since October 2008, we switched from degradable plastic bags to 100% recycled paper bags printed using water-based inks.

9. Our plastic PET bottles are 100% recyclable and contain at least 60% recycled materials, helping us to save the equivalent of 10 million new plastic bottles a year.

10. Over 70% of our make-up packaging contains recycled materials.

11. Since the end of 2008, more than 40% of our packaging assortment contains recycled content.

12. We use minimum packaging material to reduce waste and all product labels are printed on recycled paper.

13. We use green boxes to transport products from the warehouse to the stores in an effort to reduce carton packs.

Encouraging “eco-living” through our stores
14. We encourage customers to recycle. By 21 July 2009, we would have put in place a plastic recycle bin in 25 of our stores for customers to return recyclable plastic waste.

15. We sell the Bag for Life (S$3.90) to reduce the use of carrier bags. The Bag for Life is made from 100% unbleached organic cotton and is supplier by one of our Community Trade suppliers.

16. 33 stores participated in the 2008 Earth Hour, switching off dura-trans behind the cash till, tower and gondola unit, and some ceiling and wall bay lightings. We do our bit by encouraging customers to switch off their lights with us.

17. 11 stores have enhanced their energy efficiency by reducing the number of lights and potentially cutting consumption by 30%.

18. Our store fixtures come from recycled wood.
