    The Body Shop pioneered fair trade in the beauty industry in 1987.

    3. WE COULDN'T BE MORE PROUD THAT...

    Community Trade is growing. Well more than double our number of Community Trade ingredients by 2020 - from 19 to 40!

    4. HOW MUCH ALCOHOL?!

    We were the first in the industry to use organic fairly traded alcohol in fragrances. Every year we use over 500,000 litres of Community Trade organic alcohol to make our signature scents.

    5. A FRESH START

    Our organic aloe vera is hand-harvested and processed within just six hours, and is 100% preservative free.

    6. HARD ENOUGH?

    The babassu nut is the hardest nut in the world! Our organic babassu oil is extracted from the nuts of the wild babassu palm tree, found on the fringes of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

    7. BECAUSE WE LOVE BEES

    Beeswax has been used in make up for over 2000 years. We source ours from Cameroon, where the beekeepers sustainably harvest the beeswax using traditional methods.

    8. RESCUING THE RAINFOREST

    We source our Brazil nut oil from the Amazon, where Brazil nut trees can reach up to 50 metres tall. They can live for 500 years or more. Our trade helps to protect 8,000 hectares of Amazonian rainforest each year.

    9. HELPING COMMUNITIES GROW

    15 cocoa beans go into every 200ml tub of Cocoa Body Butter. Since we started working with Kuapa Kokoo in 1996, they’ve grown into one of the largest fair trade cooperatives in the world!

    10. HOORAY FOR HEMP!

    We love hemp seed oil. Hemp plants have many uses, and are four times more effective at capturing CO2 than trees!

    11. HEY HONEY

    The honey in our Almond Milk and Honey range (and lots of other products!) is collected by ‘bee whisperers’ who use traditional and sustainable methods of beekeeping in the Sheka rainforest in Ethiopia.

    12. OPEN SESAME!

    Sesame flowers pop open to expose the seed – hence the saying ‘open sesame!’ Since we began sourcing sesame seed oil from Nicaragua in 1993, our trade with the co-operative has helped build eight schools and fund 30 clean-drinking-water projects.

    13. SAY IT WITH SHEA

    We are founding members of the Global Shea Alliance, bringing industry stakeholders together with shea-producer communities. In 2015 we received a Global Shea Alliance Award in recognition of our exceptional efforts to build a sustainable shea industry.

    14. GET YOUR MITTS ON THIS

    Our Cactus Mitts are hand-cut, dried and knitted in Mexico by a cooperative of indigenous Nanhu women who use ancient Aztec production methods.

    Our soapstone burners are made in India using the same traditional techniques as the Taj Mahal!
